Try a hostel, cause they are really cheap. for instance stayed at the Far East International Youth hostel in Qianmen, and only paid 10 $ a night for a bed in a quite comfortable dorm. The hostel is on Tieshuxie street, in a traditional Chinese house. Can't miss it :)
