A visit to Yuexiu Park will give you access to a lot of monuments... The one I really liked was the Five Rams Statue (head south from the park entry on street Jiefang Bei Lu). It commemorates the myth of Guangzhou's foundation - at least one of these is definitely not a ram, however.
Fyi: there's a 5 yean park entry fee.
